Loyer TCG, Inc. uses Cisco for Content Delivery

The growing demand for mission-critical Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP)-based application services such as e-commerce, video, enterprise resource planning (ERP), and e-mail is motivating companies to increase the reliability of their network and server systems. The Cisco LocalDirector series is a critical component to building a highly reliable and integrated data-center network and content-delivery network. It is a proven, reliable performer. The Cisco LocalDirector series offers companies and Internet service providers (ISPs) a network-based server, application, and content load-balancing solution. Specifically, it is an integrated hardware and software solution that intelligently balances the load of user traffic across multiple TCP/IP application servers. All physical servers appear as one virtual server, with the result that only a single IP address and a single Universal Resource Locator (URL) are required for an entire server farm. Cisco LocalDirector ensures continuous, high availability of content and applications with proven techniques for actively managing servers and connections in a distributed environment. By distributing user requests across a cluster of servers, Cisco LocalDirector optimizes responsiveness and system capacity, and dramatically reduces the cost of providing large-scale Internet and content-delivery network services. In addition, its integrated security device is capable of protecting servers from unauthorized access. Cisco LocalDirector, a key component of a Cisco content-delivery network, accelerates content delivery by routing a client's request to the best Web server at the originating Web site. It supports critical content routing protocols such as Dynamic Feedback Protocol (DFP) and Boomerang Control Protocol (BCP) to ensure seamless integration with a Cisco network and reduce deployment costs. Via DFP, LocalDirector can communicate originating Web site load and availability to Cisco Distributed Director to improve Web site response times for clients. Servers and applications also can communicate directly with LocalDirector via DFP. Support for the BCP enables LocalDirector to move out of the originating Web site and participate as an edge device by providing load-balancing services for content engines and servers. LocalDirector features advanced Content Aware functionality. Cookie, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP) redirect, and Secure Socket Layer (SSL) session ID persistence features guarantee that a specific client gets the correct content, regardless of Internet mega proxies and shopping-cart application design. Layer 7 content load balancing increases site design flexibility and enable and accelerates content delivery. The content verification system determines with accuracy the availability of Web, application, and database servers and gives control to administrators on where to direct traffic. LocalDirector can also perform an HTTP redirect to a different location upon failure of a real or virtual IP address.

Key Features and Benefits
High-Availability Feature Sets

  • A stateful fail-over mechanism eliminates all points of failure and enables the configuration of robust, high-availability server farms.
  • The automatic detection and removal of failed applications improves overall server-farm management and reliability.
  • The Cisco LocalDirector content verification system monitors servers for application availability, application health, and database connectivity; it effectively routes and directs traffic only to available applications. Integrated into LocalDirector is a probe to test DNS server availability.
  • Upon failure of real servers, Cisco LocalDirector can HTTP redirect a client to a new location, virtual or real IP address.
  • The auto-unfail feature ensures a graceful shutdown that maintains existing connections without adding new connections to failed or removed servers.
  • A hot-standby server allows servers or ports to back up other services and ports, increasing availability.
  • The hot-standby configuration replication feature reduces administrative startup costs by automatically transferring the primary LocalDirector configuration to the secondary one.
  • HTTP redirect can redirect clients to alternative sites or content servers if all real servers are down, improving site design flexibility.
